How to Clean Washing Line Rope (Cotton & Plastic)
There are five main types of washing line rope, and most are made from cotton or plastic. Both material needs a slightly different cleaning method. The good news is that cleaning a washing line rope does not have to be difficult.
Below, we explained the both types cotton and plastic washing line ropes using simple household items.
1. How to Clean a Cotton Washing Line Rope
Cotton washing line rope needs more care than PVC because cotton fibres can absorb moisture and hold onto dirt. A simple wipe may not be enough if the rope has been outside for a long time.
What you need
- A bucket
- Warm water
- Mild detergent
- Soft sponge or cloth
Cleaning method
- Fill a bucket with warm water and add a small amount of mild detergent.
- Place the cotton washing line rope in the water.
- Allow it to soak for around 20–30 minutes.
- Gently rub the dirty sections with a soft sponge or cloth.
- Rinse the rope thoroughly with clean water.
- Check that no detergent remains in the fibres.
- Hang the rope somewhere with good airflow and allow it to dry completely.

Avoid aggressive scrubbing, as this can weaken or damage the cotton fibres. It is also important not to put the rope back into use while it is still damp.
2. How to Clean a PVC or Plastic Washing Line Rope
PVC and most plastic washing line ropes have a smooth surface, so dirt normally stays on the outside. This makes them much easier to clean than cotton rope.
What you need
- Warm water
- A small amount of mild washing-up liquid
- Soft cloth or sponge
Cleaning method
- Mix warm water with a small amount of washing-up liquid.
- Dip a soft cloth or sponge into the mixture.
- Wipe the washing line rope from one end to the other.
- Gently rub areas where dirt or marks have built up.
- Use a clean, damp cloth to remove any soap.
- Leave the rope to air dry completely before using it.

For everyday dirt, you do not normally need strong cleaning products. Warm water and mild washing-up liquid should be enough.
Final Tip
You do not need expensive cleaning products to clean most washing line ropes. Warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth are enough for regular maintenance.
The main thing is to choose the cleaning method according to the material. PVC and plastic ropes can usually be wiped clean, while cotton rope benefits from soaking and a more careful rinse.
How Often Should You Clean a Washing Line Rope?
You should clean your washing line rope once or twice a year to keep it fresh, clean and ready for use. A good time to clean it is at the start of spring before you begin using the washing line regularly, and again later in the year if it is used often. Outdoor washing lines can collect dust, dirt, rainwater, bird droppings and other grime over time, which can transfer onto freshly washed clothes. If the rope looks particularly dirty or feels sticky, clean it sooner rather than waiting for the usual cleaning time.
Can I Clean Washing Line Rope in a Washing Machine?
It depends on the type of washing line rope. PVC and steel-core washing lines should not be put in a washing machine, while some plastic ropes may be machine washable, although hand cleaning is usually safer.
Always check the care instructions on the rope’s packaging first. If it says “machine washable”, cotton and some other natural-fibre ropes can usually be washed in a machine without any problem. To protect the rope, place it inside a laundry bag or pillowcase before washing.
Use a cool or delicate cycle at a maximum of 30°C and keep the spin speed low, around 600–800 rpm. Once washed, hang the rope up and allow it to dry completely before using it again.
