Three simple knots for tying a washing line: two half hitches, a square knot and a taut-line hitch, with step-by-step rope illustrations.

How to Tie a Washing Line (3 Methods)

Knowing how to tie a washing line properly helps you create a strong and secure line for drying your clothes. You do not need complicated knots. With three simple knots, you can attach the line, join two ropes together and keep the washing line tight.

1. Two Half Hitches

This knot is used to attach one end of the washing line to a post, fence or other secure point.

Wrap the rope around the fixing point. Take the loose end over the main rope, pass it underneath and through the loop. Repeat this one more time in the same direction, then pull it tight.

2. Square Knot

A square knot is used to join two pieces of rope together when one rope is not long enough.

Cross the right rope over the left and pass it underneath. Then cross the left rope over the right and pass it underneath. Pull both ends to tighten the knot.

An easy way to remember it is: right over left, then left over right.

3. Taut-Line Hitch

This knot is used to attach and tighten the other end of the washing line.

Wrap the loose end around the main rope twice in the same direction. Then make a third loop on the other side of the first two loops. Pull the loose end through and tighten it.

The useful thing about this knot is that you can adjust the tension of the washing line by sliding the knot along the rope.
